US restricts India charter flights over 'discriminatory practices'

Washington, Jun 23 (IANS): The US has restricted charter flights from India, accusing New Delhi of engaging in "discriminatory and restrictive practices", a statement by the Department of Transportation (DoT) said.

In the statement on Monday, the Department said that a foreign air carrier of India "will be required, effective 30 days after the service date of this Order, to obtain prior approval from the Department in the form of a statement of authorization before operating any Third and/or Fourth Freedom charter flights to or from the US".

"We are taking this action because the government of India has impaired the operating rights of US carriers and has engaged in discriminatory and restrictive practices with respect to US carrier services to and from India," it added.

Air India is currently the only foreign air carrier of India that holds the Department authority to conduct operations to/from the US with its own aircraft and crew.

The Department further said that "this restrictive and discriminatory treatment of US carriers as regards charters has important implications in the area of scheduled operations as well".

The DoT also alleged that the Indian government has "imposed restrictions that prevent US air carriers from making full use of these charter rights" according to the statement.

Washington however, has "not placed any limitations on US–India charter operations, and Air India has been and remains free to conduct the full complement of passenger charter services".

On March 25, the Indian government had suspended all scheduled passenger services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Monday's development comes after the Department restricted Chinese airlines from flying into the US.

    People,

Air India does not allow other gulf carriers fly to Mangalore but have flights to these gulf countries...If this is not 'discriminatory practices' then what else is it ???....

If they allow foreign airlines to fly to Mangalore....ticket prices will come down big time like 50%...and perhaps nobody will fly in Air-India...

To sustain this non-sense our Babu's will do this drama ...and get away some times ( Like Mangalore International Carriers Flights)...and some times get a kick on their backside....like in this case...

Air-India stop this stupidity...improve quality of your flight services...have competitive prices like your competitors ....and stop all caste reservation in Air-India !!!....Give job on merit and efficiency... Then see the results...

Last but not least Put former UPA Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel behind bars and recover Rs 3000 Crore commission he got from gulf airlines....and deposit that money in Air-India account...

    ...Tak...Takk...

Last month the USA did similar ban on China for discouraging US flights. The action was immediate, China allowed US flights to land. So Namaste Trump expects the same from India and a window of 30 days is good for him. He knows India will immediately dither as done in Harley Davidson's case of 50% duty or we will buy more weapons from the USA and keep him happy. He is a smart businessman

At least this is done in national interest.
Former civil aviation minister Praful Patel of NCP favored foreign private airlines mainly Gulf carriers, causing huge losses to national carrier Air India during 2008-09.

American national interest Yes. 30 days from now even Air India Needs case by case - each flight - authorization prior to operation Each sector. To Operate from India to USA and USA to India. That is called Third and Fourth Freedom of Air flights.
We can always blame Berchappa or Pakistan or now even china.
Time to move on and try to help ourselves to make our lives better.
USA airlines also wants to help in so called repatriation flights. That is discrimination as per them.

All Vande Bharat flights have been discriminatory as passengers have been charged double the actual cost of travel (plus they have had to pay extra for food and lodging during quarantine stay in hotels). Government was minting money from these desperate citizens even when crude oil prices hit rock bottom

Vande Bharat flights cannot be termed as repatriation.

    Very well said Sunil.
Current govt. is only trying to fleece helpless returning NRIs to make its end meets, through sloppy plans and strategies, which back fir each time.
This govt. has no shame in taking credit for bringing NRIs back home, by charging heavy air fare, even in these times of crisis.
