Mangalore, Feb 15: The diamond jubilee celebrations of the parish unit of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of Holy Cross parish, Cordel, were held at their school grounds here on Sunday February 14.

Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza presided over the programme on Sunday.

Western range inspector general of police (IGP) Gopal B Hosur, Bangalore Christ University International office director J W Lobo, Bangalore-based Claratia Publications executive editor Gabriel Vaz, and ICYM - Cordel parish unit former president Joachim D’Silva, were the chief guests on the occasion.

Hosur, in his chief guest’s address, acknowledged the co-operation of heads of various parishes across the city in addressing various communal issues that have dogged the community in the recent past.

Meanwhile, in his message to ICYM members, he said that to shun cynicism and resentment, they should focus their energy on the positive side of any incident.

The Bishop said that his early association with the members of the Catholic Youth Movement (CYM), as it was known then, was in the many parishes across Mangalore diocese where he served as parish priest.

He served as spiritual director for many parish units of ICYM later.  He also urged the community youth to develop leadership qualities to strengthen the community in every sphere.

J W Lobo urged the community youth to empower themselves economically and educationally, and said that it will help strengthen their positions in society as the weak and hapless are shunned by their kin and also society.

Gabriel Vaz said that the community youth can succeed in life by being honest, truthful and committed in their chosen career, not necessarily administrative services, but by following their interests.

He urged them to develop wide interest by traveling and interacting with the locals, in order to get an insight into various issues of that region and people.

Cordel parish priest and ICYM parish unit director Fr Valerian Pinto, assistant directors and assistant parish priests Fr Arun Lobo and Fr Rajesh Rosario, animator Susheel Noronha, associate animators Noel D’Souza and Leena Lobo, president Alwyn Tauro, secretary Precilla Sequeira, treasurer Sheldon D’Silva, and conveners Civilson Menezes and Zeena D’Costa, were present on the dais.

Hosur presented a prize to Chikkaswamy, the cricket team captain of Kadri police station, which won the friendly cricket match organized recently between ICYM, Cordel unit, and Kadri police team.

He also released the diamond jubilee special issue of ‘Zaith’, the parish bulletin, on the same occasion.

Nishel D'Souza and Precilla Sequeira compered the programme.
