New Delhi, Jun 25 (IANS): Union Home Minister and former BJP President Amit Shah on Thursday criticised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi saying one family's "greed for power" led to the imposition of Emergency 45 years ago and the country was turned into a prison.

In a series of tweets, Shah said, "On this day, 45 years ago one family's greed for power led to the imposition of the Emergency. Overnight the nation was turned into a prison. The press, courts, free speech... all were trampled over. Atrocities were committed on the poor and downtrodden."

He said that due to the efforts of lakhs of people, the Emergency was lifted. "Democracy was restored in India, but it remained absent in the Congress. The interests of one family prevailed over party interests and national interests. This sorry state of affairs thrives in today's Congress too," Shah said in another tweet.

The announcement of the Emergency was made on June 25, 1975, days after the Allahabad High Court found Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractices and debarred her as a parliamentarian for six years. During the Emergency, most of Indira Gandhi's political opponents were jailed and the press was censored. Taking a potshot at former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, the Home Minister said, "During the recent CWC (Congress Working Committee) meet, senior members and younger members raised a few issues. But, they were shouted down. A party spokesperson was unceremoniously sacked. The sad truth is -- leaders are feeling suffocated in Congress."

Shah was referring to the media reports that few of the senior party leaders advised the Congress MP from Kerala's Wayanad to not attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the removal of party spokesperson Sanjay Jha for a critical news article.

"As one of India's opposition parties, Congress needs to ask itself: Why does the Emergency mindset remain? Why are leaders who don't belong to one dynasty unable to speak up? Why are leaders getting frustrated in Congress? Else, their disconnect with people will keep widening," Shah added.

Enough has been said and talked about the one family in last 6 years and now people want to hear something new.
The average crude oil prices in 2008 -$100 , 2013-$99 and 2020-$37 a barrel and corresponding petrol prices in India during 2008-Rs.48, 2013-Rs.65 and in 2020- Rs. 80 respectively.
Please explain to people what kind of economics is this and how people are going to bear the burden.

Like a broken record keeps uttering nehru, Gandhi, emergency, 60 years....etc. Whatever the previous visionaries achieved in 60 plus years, you destroyed in 6 years. We are in worst form of emergency since 2014. Indira Gandhi's emergency was much better than this communal emergency where the whole country is on destruction path on all sectors.. During 1975 emergency period everything was functioning at peak performance level, GDP was increasing, all had jobs and the country was in progress mode, congress never lost people's confidante, every body was appreciating congress. Now people are fed up with BJP and want to get rid of BJP once for all.

We require a government who provide basic food, education, health care, jobs and a dwelling place. What the people of country is facing for the last 6 years is totally different as people suffer from malnourishment, no basic education, no healthcare, migrants on roads, hungry for food, Mass unemployment, no proper house to stay, COVID 19 fear and death, War situation created by your Government with harsh arrogant behavior with neighbors like China, Nepal & traditional Pakistan.
What all BJP promised "Acche Din" no where to see but people never thought they will face such drastic bad days!!!???

Why Amit Shah is hiding and defending Sanjay Gandhi husband of Menaka Gandhi and father of Varun Gandhi was equally responsible for imposition of Emergency. Without Sanjay Gandhi it would have been impossible for Indira Gandhi to impose Emergency.

Ask any elderly above 60yrs, what they know on emergency and their personal experiences. All they will tell is about 1971 war, where entire india stood united and divided pak. The maximum they can say on emergency is some leaders taken to jails for some time.

The current generation only heard of emergency and we all thought it could have been worst. But, the same generation who seen emergency say, that emergency is nothing when compared to last 06 years of Modi Govt.

Dear Roshan,

What you said is 100% true. We have seen 1971 war and also emergency. I do not support emergency but common people had no problems. On the contrary there was some sort of discipline in goverment offices. Many opposition leaders were jailed and there was some news blackout. Newspapers like Navabharata( from Mangslore) had some blank spaces .

But now it is undeclared emergency. People who voice against government policies are heckled and put up lot of inconvenience by way of fake cases and raided using government machinery.

Leaders need to unite the country, work for the progress and support the poor. In this government all three are missing.

How far you can go by finding mistakes of Congress ? You need to deliver Mr. Shah.

You are never interested to find a way to resolve any issues but try to undermine your mistakes by pointing out the mistakes done by Congress. Here nobody is interested to look at the past, but the present and future.

The BJP's hate for Gandhi family is very clear when the party started projecting Hindutava icon 'Ghadar Savarkar' who hatched the planning of Mahatma assassination in 'Savarkar Bhavan' in Pune.

This is the same party has no problem to continue dearly relations with 'Menaka Gandhi' and her son 'Varun Gandhi' from the same family. If the party is not comfortable with father of the nation why don't send circular to both party leaders to address by 'first' name?

During late PM Indira Gandhi emergency, there were no murders of innocent Indians in the name of 'lynching'. She proved no compromise for national security even under the pressure of US President Dixon she asked to continue the mission and got Bangladesh liberated. There were no 'willful defaulters' who made to escape with billions of loot under the watchful eyes of 'Chowkidhar'. There are fake no fake anti-corruption crusade who maintain absolute silence in the defense scam like 'Rafale Jet', 'bullet proof material from China', and Chinook and Apache purchase from US. The government institutions as not slave to one man dictatorship.

Today's BJP has undeclared emergency in which even silent protesters are put behind bar using criminal and terror laws. Even activist, poets, Doctors everyone who is critical to government policies are considered threat to the nation.
