Boycotting Chinese goods may not be feasible: FIEO

New Delhi, Jun 25 (IANS): As chorus grows for the boycott of Chinese products, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has said that immediate restriction on imports from the country may not be feasible as India needs to get its supply chain in place.

In a video conference with the media here, FIEO President S.K. Saraf said that India has to be cautious while banning or restricting import of Chinese goods.

FIEO Director General Ajay Sahai was of the view that that a knee-jerk reaction would not be good and the country needs to improve its supply chain infrastructure to lower its dependence on imports.

He also noted that there is a major requirement for ease of starting businesses in the country in order to strengthen the manufacturing scenario.

On the exports outlook, FIEO said there may be a 10 per cent decline in exports from India this fiscal.

In a statement, it said that Indian exporters are receiving lots of enquiries from countries where anti-China sentiments are high. Many of these enquiries have been converted into orders, as well, said a FIEO statement.

"However, the demand in employment intensive sectors like gems and jewellery, apparels, footwear, handicrafts, carpets is still a challenge. We do not expect much improvement in demand.

"Therefore, we expect around 10 per cent decline in India's exports in the current fiscal. In case of a second wave, the contraction may reach 20 per cent," it said.

The export recovery is likely to be led by pharmaceuticals, medical and diagnostic equipment, technical textiles, agri and processed foods, plastics, chemicals and electronics. Since the domestic demand for petroleum products is extremely low, there may be increasing exports of petroleum as well for such companies to sustain in business, it said.

Knee jerk reaction and emotions are one thing...

    ...but business is something else.

Here the exporters are worried that their exports would be hit big time.

China has managed to create internally 100% supply chains for almost all the goods it exports.

India possibly does not even have 10% coverage in this regard.

Modi showed extreme urgency to conduct sudden demonetization and lockdown at the stroke of 8pm. But for something (ban on Chinese import, investment and sponsorship) that is in the best interest of the country, the weak PM is hesitant.

Indians simply cannot make up their minds about whether they love China or hate it.

Last week, while some Indians vandalised stores that sell Chinese products in retaliation to border tension between the two countries, OnePlus 8 Pro, which was launched in India on June 18, was sold out within minutes on Amazon India. There has been no dip in sales of other Chinese smartphone brands either. Things will not change overnight, mostly because consumers don’t have much else to choose from.

After the PM Modi's pet project of 'Demonetisation' many of SME and MSME are on ICU or shut long back. The vacuum is filled by Chinese imports that are better in quality than India within affordable pricing.

Unless we Indian's don't revive the companies like HMT famous for watch brands and invest in BSNL and MTNL state subsidiaries the boycott will only harm the retail sector. The citizen should boycott who are promoting it and ask the BJP government to ban Chinese from investment in India.
All the present contract in defense, infrastructure and telecommunication should be awarded to state owned Indian companies.

But India can increase tariffs on Chinese products to make it less attractive in Indian market. This is possible only if Modi discloses true surrender terms and agreement.
