India's economy is in deep trouble: S&P

New Delhi, Jun 27 (IANS): S&P Global Ratings said on Friday that the Indian economy is in deep trouble with growth likely to contract by 5 per cent this financial year.

"India's economy is in deep trouble. Difficulties in containing the virus, an anaemic policy response, and underlying vulnerabilities, especially across the financial sector, are leading us to expect growth to fall by 5 per cent this fiscal year before rebounding in 2021," S&P said in an update.

In its report titled 'Asia-Pacific losses near $3 trillion as balance sheet recession looms', S&P projected the region's economy to shrink by 1.3 per cent in 2020, but grow by 6.9 per cent in 2021 with a loss of $3 trillion output over these two years.

"Asia-Pacific has shown some success in containing Covid-19 and, by and large, responded with effective macroeconomic policies," said Shaun Roache, chief economist for Asia-Pacific at S&P Global Ratings.

"This can help cushion the blow and provide a bridge to the recovery. The recovery looks set to be weighed down by indebted balance sheets, however."

It flagged one risk in another "balance sheet recession" in which at least one important sector of the economy -- the government, firms, or households -- tries to bolster its weak financial position by saving more, paying down debt, and spending less, S&P said.

"The downturn caused by Covid-19 did not start as a balance-sheet recession but may end up as one," Roache said. "This means less investment, a slower recovery, and a permanent hit to the economy that will last even after a vaccine is found."

Banks may lend less than they normally would in a recovery to focus on the overhang from the pandemic. Private firms may prefer to stabilise debt rather than ramp up spending on new investments, even though demand is improving.

The economy is healing but private sector confidence remains fragile. If private sector spending does not improve quickly, more stimulus may be unleashed, S&P said.

Sir, For your information, Petrol and diesel do not come under the purview of goods and services tax (GST). Other factors include excise duty, VAT, BS VI premium, marketing cost and margins, dealers commission etc.
During the UPA regime, from 2011 to 2014, the crude oil prices ranged from $74.33 to $102.15 per barrel. Accordingly, the retail prices ranged between ₹61.5 and ₹78.7 at that point in time.

The BJP government had a price advantage due to the global prices as they went as low as $24 per barrel in February 2016. Even then, the retail price was at ₹62.6 per litre. The crude oil prices ranged from $98 to $23 per barrel during the last six years.

Karnataka contributes nearly 10% of the overall Central revenue, yet the state gets back only five percent of the redistributed funds. Karnataka contributes 9.56% to the overall Centre in revenues but it gets back just around 4.5%.

Presently, Karnataka receives only a paltry 47 paisa for every rupee of tax it contributes to the Union, in comparison, Uttar Pradesh receives `1.79 for every rupee they contribute.

The state government levies tax on combined value of (refined petrol cost + dealer commision + central excise duty). So, this is tax on tax mechanism unlike GST.

Please do your home work properly. Do not spread the fake news.

the moot point the states get more than fair share from this revenue. At least Rajasthan and Maharashtra can help in reducing state portion of the tax. As far as the distribution of the collected taxes are concerned Bimaru states need more money than richer states.

    Rajesh,
Here is the latest report on fuel prices published by none other than Hindustan Times. Noe don't tell that it's fake. The amount of central excise duty on fuel has been always more than state's VAT. The sources from fake university does not publish the truth.....it's all lala.....lala.....lala...

"Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or value-added tax (VAT).
Taxes make up for nearly two-thirds of the retail selling price. As much as Rs 50.69 per litre or 64% in petrol price is due to taxes—Rs 32.98 is the central excise duty and Rs 17.71 is local sales tax or VAT.
In the case of diesel, over 63% of the retail selling price is taxes. Out of the total tax incidence of Rs 49.43 per litre, Rs 31.83 is by way of central excise and Rs 17.60 is VAT."

The 'Andh Bhakth' who educated from Whatapp university don't not count zeros in trillion Dollar economy will call S&P Global Ratings 'anti-national' for giving report against the PM Modi's leadership.

The auditors rating are very much taking into account of steep rise in fuel prices for 21 consecutive days.

During the past 14 years, the price of crude oil was the lowest in 2004 when the UPA came to power. Back then, crude oil was around USD 25 a barrel and petrol price in Delhi was Rs 33 per litre.

In 2011, the crude oil peaked at around USD 112 per barrel and the retail price of petrol in Delhi then was Rs 65.76 per litre.
With this, the total incidence of excise duty on petrol has risen to ₹32.98 per litre and that on diesel to ₹31.83. The tax on petrol was ₹9.48 per litre when the Modi government took office in 2014 and that on diesel was ₹3.56 a litre.
For last 6 years, Govt and Oil Marketing Companies have been making huge windfall gains. The BJP Government in total would have made a profit of Rs 20 lakh crores by charging exorbitant taxes on petrol-diesel.
Crude oil is at its lowest. It does not make sense..when BJP can bring down the price, why burden the people in such hard times?? Why this vindictive attitude?

We cannot rebuild the economy unless there is acceptance of the mistakes done and the corrective actions taken. However the experience in dealing with such situation can make the government to take the right actions at right time in this process.

This government is on denial mode all the time and the blame game with earlier governments. This attitude can ever take us out of the present situation. Also this government lacks knowledge or experience and hence only doing cosmetic changes from time to time without long time vision.

Now all ministers will come out and blame S&P Global Rating and discredit them. Even the supporters will join this chorus without any fruitful action. We miss MMS and he would have taken us out of this mess with right actions at right time.

    God save our country.

ECONOMY IN DEEP TROUBLE??? Whom to blame???

Our BJP Government and their policies are entirely responsible for this distress, don't you think so?? For more than 6 years BJP is in power and solely responsible for this deep trouble and people facing enormous difficulties in many fronts!!!

We require good Economists and qualified people to run the country and not the present lot of many criminal background MP's and their old mentality and also their lack of education cost the country and the people. Whatever genuine issues have been buried and they talk of opposition parties!!!???

WHY DON'T WE COMPARE WESTERN DEMOCRACIES & OUR LEADERS VISITED MULTIPLE TIMES TO THESE COUNTRES but we don't adopt development policies from them instead we are in blame game of past 70 years!!!

Come on guys people are aware what you did in 6 years!!!! What we achieved until 2014 has been destroyed???
