Privatising trains, govt taking away lifeline of poor: Rahul

New Delhi, Jul 2 (IANS): Former Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi on Thursday sharpened his attack on the Narendra Modi government over its moves to allow private firms to run passenger trains. He said government was taking away the lifeline of the country from the poor, and the people will give a befitting reply.

"Rail is the only lifeline of the poor and the government is taking it away from them. Snatch whatever you want to. But remember -- the people of the country will give a befitting reply," Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet attaching a news report.

His remarks came a day after the Indian Railways announced a major push for the private entities in the Indian Railways. The Railways have invited the request for qualifications for private participation for passenger train operations on 109 pairs of routes through 151 modern trains.

The national transporter on Wednesday said that it plans to allow private entities to operate passenger trains and the project would entail private sector investment of about Rs 30,000 crore.

The objective of the initiative is to introduce modern technology rolling stock with reduced maintenance, reduced transit time, boost job creation, provide enhanced safety, provide world class travel experience to passengers, the Railway Ministry said.

The 109 (origin-destination) pairs of trains have been formed into 12 clusters across the Indian Railway network. Each train shall have a minimum of 16 coaches.

According to the railway ministry, this is the first initiative of private investment for running passenger trains over the Indian Railways network. The move began last year with the introduction of Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

After national carrier 'Air India' Maharajah who use to welcomed our guest from decades now Indian railways for sale. This is the same Railways which gave more than Rs 10,000 crores profit twice during former Railway Minister Lalu Pradad Yadav.

From selling ports, mines, telecommunication, airport, Air India between Adani and Ambani's who helped BJP with $5 Billion in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, now entire country is for sale under PM Modi's India.

    1. Instead of selling the public sector that employees more than million employees , Why don't ask the private investor to invest in 'Bullet train' make the project profitable?
    2. What about the millions of employees who are already working for the railways from decades will be retained with the same salaries and benefits?
    3. Is Indian Railways fate will be like MTNL and BSLN, once a profitable sector made to go under losses and then taken over by private companies kicking the old staff?
    4. Why not government call for bidding for new sector with private companies own investment?
    5. Who will be responsible to maintain the railways infrastructure once taken over by the private investors?
    6. What if these private sector don't make profit even the operating cost of the government?
    7. Is private operators entry will make the poor man journey affordable India with better facility?

There is a very pleasant paradigm change in services and facilities on Konkan routes after IRCTC took over. Even the quality of food has improved significantly.

We need in-situ decisions and not armchair assumptions.

I disagree with Rahul Gandhi. Privatization in aviation only improved quality of air travel in India and also brought down prices for air travel. Privatization in road public road transport also thrives with both the private sector and the government operating. Therefore privatization will improve quality of rail travel as in Europe. The public will have the option to travel either in public or private trains. Its a win win situation for all

Privatization no doubt improves quality significantly and creates high paying jobs but it comes with high price tag too. So, can poor people can afford this??????.... In India there are lot of poor people than rich or middle class. So, RaGa here is fighting for poor and for BPL who will be totally neglected if govt privatizes every sector to appease its buddies.

Rahulji, If the poor have opted a government which sells off the very backbone of the country, then it is their own choice. They deserve the consequences.
Don't ever forget it was the pathetic performance, infighting and corruption of congress that has led the people to go for this deadly option .

Money collected selling all government entities one by one, I dont understand the motive. government doesn't have money or government wants to enjoy making country poor. Days are not far as all those educational institutions running under government will soon be privatization and sold to our dearest friends.
