Yeddy Stands by George Fernandes, Offers to Bear Medical Expenses

Bangalore, Feb 23: Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has come forward to bear the medical expenses of ailing veteran firebrand socialist leader George Fernandes.
"I know the health of George Fernandes is not good and he is suffering. The state government is ready to bear all the medical expenses,’’ the chief minister said while talking to reporters in Bangalore.
The 79-year-old Fernandes, who hails from coastal Mangalore, has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease since the last few months.
The former union defence minister, who had also served as the convenor of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) during the six-year rule of A B Vajpayee.
"Fernandes hails from Karnataka and he is a pride of the statre,’’ Yeddyurappa said pointing out that the people of the state are proud of his contribution to the state in various capacities.
Yeddyurappa, however, declined to comment on the controversy involving Fernandes' family
members over his assets
Karnataka had borne the medical expenditure of former President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who has settled in Bangalore after demitting office. It may be recalled that the state government has followed the practice of bearing the medical expenditure of several leading Kannada writers and film-makers, when they or their families were unable to meet the expenses.
