DMK MLA arrested in shooting case

Chennai, Jul 12 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Police on Sunday arrested DMK lawmaker representing Thiruporur, L. Idhayavarman, in connection with shooting at an AMMK party worker over a land dispute.

According to police, on late Saturday, Idhayavarman's father Lakshmipathi fired three rounds after he and his supporters were attacked by the AMMK party worker's friend Kumar over a land dispute.

Lakshmipathi fired at AMMK worker Thandavamurthy's car in which the assailants were escaping at Thiruporur in Chengalpattu district.

The police have seized two pistols one of which was licensed to the DMK lawmaker.

It has been alleged that Thandavamurthy's friend Kumar was into real estate business and he was trying to encroach upon government land behind the DMK lawmaker's house.

On Saturday, an argument erupted between Lakshmipathi and Kumar when the latter along with his supporters had visited the land to make a pathway over it in which the lawmaker's house was built.

Later the fight turned physical with Kumar allegedly attacking Lakshmipathi with a sickle and the latter in self defence took out a pistol and shot at his attackers who were escaping in the car.

In his complaint, Thandavamurthy told the police that Lakshmipathi had fired three shots, of which two damaged his car and one injured a passerby named Suresh.

Suresh and Lakshmipathi have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
