Two earthquakes hit Assam, no damage


Guwahati, Jul 16 (IANS): Two earthquakes of 4.1 and 2.6 magnitudes on the Richter scale hit some parts of Assam and adjoining northeast areas on Thursday. No damage or casualty have been reported.

According to a India Meteorological Department (IMD) official, the first quake of the magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale hit southern Assam's Karimganj, Silchar and adjoining areas at 7.57 a.m.

Another tremor of 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the Kokrajhar district in western Assam at 1.9 p.m.

The epicentre of the tremors, that lasted a few seconds, were at 18 km and 11 km depths.

Seismologists consider the mountainous northeast region as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world and has seen some of the biggest quakes in history.
