Karnataka to issue caste, income certificates to Brahmins

Bengaluru, Jul 17 (IANS): Karnataka will issue caste and income certificates to Brahmins in the southern state to reduce the socio-economic inequality faced by the community, an official said on Thursday.

"A notification has been issued to tehsildars in all 30 districts to issue caste and income certificates to Brahmins so that they can also benefit from the government schemes and scholarships," a Revenue Department official told IANS here.

The notification comes a month after the Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board on June 10 appealed to Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa to issue the certificates to the traditionally dominant community, which accounts for 3 per cent of the 7 crore state population.

B S Yediyurappa

"Though Brahmins are in 'minority' in terms of their population across the state, they need caste and income certificates to benefit from the welfare schemes meant for the economic weaker sections such as SC, ST and OBC groups," the official said.

The board was set up in March 2019 as a state-run company with Rs 5 crore authorised capital and Rs 5 crore equity and is registered with the Registrar of Companies.

The notification was issued to the local bodies and taluk offices after several members of the community complained to state Revenue Minister R. Ashoka that they were unable to benefit from the welfare schemes in the absence of the certificates.

The certificates will also help students from the community to avail scholarships for higher studies from the state-funded board if their gross annual family income is less than Rs 8 lakh per year.

The board has also urged the state government to implement the 10 per cent quota for its community members under the economically weaker sections, as applicable for Central government jobs and admissions to central institutions.

Noting that every community has people who are forward and backward economically for various reasons, including historical, the official said the board would be empowered to serve the Brahmins.

"The board will provide interest-free loans to the financially weaker sections of the community," said its Chairman H.S. Sachidananda Murthy.

The Karnataka Chief Minister being Lingyat issuing caste certificate to 'Brahmin' is against the teaching of 'Basavana'.

On 21 January 2017, the RSS’ joint general secretaries Dattatreya Hosabale as well as Manmohan Vaidya had issued statements on the issue to spell out the RSS’ stand.

“Caste-based reservation to SCs, STs and OBCs, according to the Constitution, should be continued… The reservations should continue till caste discrimination exists in Hindu society.”

The first term that humiliates Dalits is ‘Brahmin’. The Oxford Dictionary defines a Brahmin as a socially or culturally superior person. Does it not follow that others in society are inferior?

It was Periyar’s clarity on caste that led to abolition of the practice of having caste surnames in Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka under BJP ruling the 'Brahminism' seems to more aggressive suppressing the rights of the lower caste Hindu.

In Andhra Pradesh Rohit Vermla died of this very reason of untocuability. In Karnataka BJP it is glorified.

India need to focus on human development rather than caste based development. Focus is required to help everyone without mixing caste or religion rather its every citizen to empower to next level and get higher productivity. When such quotas and reservations put limitation on others to deserve a opportunity if they are qualified to get certain positions based on thier qualifications or merits. These caste based funds or reservations will not help everyone but will help few. Again this is my opinion without bias. Politicians are not supposed to mixing religion or caste in thier leadership role. Thier focus is on creating jobs, economy etc

Karnataka needs to do a survey ..What percent of backward people are poor and what percent of forwards castes are rich ..and then do what is right ..simply because a few people are making noise about it doesn't mean that they should oblige .

Otherwise it can be considered as mere appeasement politics and it will create its own set of problems ...What about other castes ? like bunts ..there are many many poor bunts ..who will issue income certificates to them..?

Income certificate ? What does it mean ? what is the need , for such a certificate ? you mean you do not know what my income is ? with all the PAN card and bank account mapping and digitization of money ..? Why waste the govt machinery resources in such meaningless measures.
This is some joke by Yeddi saab ..better to go to sleep

Please do not speak in riddles. Who is the 3% ?

If India had gained nothing in 70 years, what could Modi have sold during his rule ? Salaries of government employees are not paid since 3 to 6 months. Was this happening before 2014 ? Who swallowed up all the money that was in the government coffers ? Congress ?

There are a number of brahmins who are poor. Yes, they were rich prior to 1974. Some of the Brahmin families got devastated after the land reforms act. Just because one is beahmin, you cannot deprive him of the deserved facilities. This step of the govt will give justice to the branhmin community at last. I don't understand why this heartburn. It is for the natural justice which is fully justified.
