AAP demands Tripura CM's resignation over comments on Jats

New Delhi, Jul 22 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb for his controversial comments about the Jat community. Delhi Assembly's peace and Harmony Committee said it has taken cognizance of the matter.

In a meeting on Wednesday, the committee recorded the statements of the complainants. According to the Chairperson of the committee, Raghav Chadha, several complaints have been received regarding the remarks made by the Tripura CM.

Condemning Deb's statement, Aam Aadmi Party leader Kailash Gahlot said, "Yesterday Tripura chief Minister Biplab Deb who is from the BJP had said that the Punjabis and the Jats are physically strong but are less intelligent and are lunatic. Both the communities are very much hurt by such a statement coming from a sitting chief minister of a state. As a representative of the Jat community, I want to make it clear that we condemn such a regressive statement. Before the election, the BJP goes to every house and asks for votes from both Punjabi Sikhs and Jats. But after the election they make such comments."

He said, "On behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party, I want immediate resignation of Biplab Deb. I want to ask the BJP whether they have sent any notice to him or taken any action. If they have not done so that will mean that the party agrees with such regressive thought. I want to be very clear that the Jat community will not tolerate such disrespect and will stand united."

Adding to his statement, AAP senior leader and MLA Jarnail Singh said the statement made by Biplab Deb has hurt the Sikh community at large. The Aam Aadmi Party will not leave this matter here. The Sikh and Jat organisations across the country and Delhi are staging protests against such a regressive statement and we will also keep protesting against such kind of mindset.
