Udupi, Mar 8:
A mobile dental clinic with state-of- the-art facilities, renovations of the prosthodontics lab, and a comprehensive dental clinic, which allows students to learn how to manage a patient’s treatment from the beginning to the end with a complete follow-up are some of the new initiatives Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) has planned for the year 2010.

These announcements were made by the dean Dr Shobha Tandon at the annual College Day celebrations held at the Syndicate Bank Golden Jubilee Hall here on Saturday March 6.

While presenting the annual report, Dr Tandon also indicated that a future target of MCODS was to have new innovative research projects with multinational collaboration.

Marking the achievements of the BDS students in various fields of dentistry in front of an audience of proud parents, faculty, and students, Dr Tandon said that MCODS received recognition for its PG certificate course.

The college was also conferred with the ISO 9001-2008 by TUV Rheinland, and makes it one of the first dental colleges in India to receive it. The year was also marked by Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with the Indian Academy of LASER Dentistry and for research with the World Health Organisation (WHO), ICMR, and Colgate-Palmolive.

The chief guest, retired Maj Gen Dr P N Awasthi, secretary, Dental Council of India, and an expert in oral and maxillofacial surgery, advised the BDS graduates on taking their first step into the career world.

He said, “Whenever you do anything, analyze properly what you are doing and try to obtain higher standards, because you are about to begin your journey. Dentistry is a journey where you will never reach your destination. You have to run the very tight rope on the limits of life.”

Calling Manipal a temple town of learning, Awasthi encouraged the students to concentrate on research for simple and cost-effective technology.

He gave away the awards to top-rankers and gold medal winners. Vasanthi Pai, wife of Manipal University chancellor Dr Ramdas M Pai, pro-chancellor Dr H S Ballal, and registrar Dr G K Prabhu, were present.
