Dona Paula, Aug 7: Manipal Hospitals Goa performed a total knee replacement surgery to give a new lease of life to a 42-year-old patient. The patient was suffering for the past 6 years and was immobile. The patient was suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis with severely worn-out knees and was wheelchair-bound for 2 years. Dr Rohan Dessai, specialist joint replacement surgeon at Manipal Hospitals Goa and team successfully performed a bilateral knee replacement surgery.
The patient had tried all kinds of treatment during her 6 years of suffering including ayurveda, homeopathy and allopathy but with no respite. She was ultimately confined to the wheelchair for the last two years with crippling knee arthritis.
Sharing details on the case study, Dr Rohan Dessai, a specialist joint replacement surgeon at Manipal Hospitals Goa said, “At the time of consultation, she was presented with only 20 degrees range of motion in both her knees, which made walking impossible. Bilateral knee replacement was the only viable option considering her condition and we suggested the same for her. The surgery for both the knees was performed in one sitting and the patient was made to walk on the same day of surgery. She then underwent physiotherapy and rehabilitation post the surgery, is now comfortably walking and has achieved more than 90 degrees motion in both her knees.”
He further added, “Total knee and hip replacement surgeries are a boon for such patients as it dramatically improves their quality of life, putting patients back on their feet and instils confidence in them. Such surgeries can last for up to about 20 years and offer patients a pain-free and independent life. Patients can do all kinds of activities post replacement surgeries, which include walking, cycling, climbing stairs, playing simple sports such as tennis, golf and hiking.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a common autoimmune disease, which typically affects women, and the incidence is on the rise over the last decade. The disease typically affects the joints of the body causing pain and swelling. Over a period, if left untreated or partially treated, causes severe destruction of the joints ultimately leading to disabling arthritis leading to immobility. Commonly involved joints include the knee and the hip joints but can also include the elbows, shoulder and the small joints of the hands and feet.
Sharing his happiness on the successful knee replacement by the team, Manish Trivedi, hospital director, Manipal Hospitals Goa, said, “Manipal Hospitals Goa has always been at the forefront of providing the latest and best treatment facilities with contemporary techniques and reliable infrastructure to provide best solutions for the patients.
