Bangalore, Mar 15: In a startling revelation, chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Justice S R Nayak, admitted that human rights violations take place blatantly even under his nose, but he is helpless in dealing with them.

He was speaking at a programme on the ‘Country’s Finances and Influence of Contract Workers on Working Classes’organized by Karnataka Power Tranmission Corporation Employees Union at the Cauvery Bhavan in the city on Sunday March 14.

“Human rights of the workers of the Commission get violated. The Commission suffers from lack of basic amenities. The government has not shown interest in confirming the services of the contract workers who have been working since the last several years. The government is yet to take a concrete decision on absorbing the contract workers as permanent employees. The workers, who have been working since the last ten to 15 years, are being exploited by not confirming their services,” he explained, adding that the Chief Minister, Yeddyurappa, has been a mute spectator to these developments.

Lecturer in the law department of Karnatak University, Dr Sharat Babu, opined that financial inequality is cropping up between the workers because of the contract work system. “There are lot of differences between the contract workers and permanent employees of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation in terms of facilities enjoyed by them. The contract workers are dreaming that one day, they will also be able to get the facilities and rights they were assured of in the constitution,” he stated.

Union secretary, Narayanaswamy, CPM state secretary, V J K Nair, Narasimhan, Varalakshmi, former MLA, Michael Fernandes and president of Karnataka Workers’ Representatives Union, Subba Rao, were present.
