Kundapur, Aug 17: In a tragic incident, a lorry hit a student crossing the road killing him on the spot. The incident took place on Monday August 17.

The deceased was Kishan Kharvi (17), a resident of Gandhinagar, Maravanthe. He was a first PU student.

Kishan had come to the college in connection with some educational activity and was returning home when the speeding lorry hit him.

Byndoor police circle inspector Suresh Nayak and sub-inspector Sangeetha visited the spot. The body was shifted to Byndoor hospital mortuary by Gangolli Apatbhandava ambulance.

    As one who has travelled in many parts of the world, I have a suggestion to minimize these tragic fatalities.

    1. Tighten AND ENFORCE the laws . If the driver is at fault, penalize him or her.
    2. Use modern tools to catch speeding vehicles by using, traffic cameras which automatically record licence plates and speed and send “traffic tickets” with fines to the driver or vehicle owners. No fusss, no muss!
    3. If number of offences exceed a certain points, force the driver to undergo “driver education” .
    4. Penalize drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.

    These are some of the methods . The list is long.

    But enforce the law , enforce ....... it is important.

    These day vehicles drive very fast especially in Kundpaur area. Many drivers consume alcohol and drive. They are biggest risks to poor paedestrians. There must be separate walking track on side of road for paedestrians.

    Please dont blame lorry drivers, people should watch properly while crossing the roads.. and pedestrians are always in hurry to cross the roads

    I agree, it is easy to blame heavy vehicle drivers. It is very difficult to stop the heavy loaded vehicle if the driver notice something in last minute.
    We, as pedestrians have the tendency "break ijja gadid?" and cross the road with casual attitude.
    It is a highway and you have to watch the road and cross and also have that ability to judge the speed on the oncoming vehicle.

    As, Kusuma said, there is no foot path or pathway for people to walk. Also there should be one or 2 pedestrian crossing with marks and road signs and encourage people to use ONLY those crossings in a busy town. We do not need to cross everywhere like animals.
