1.89 crore salaried people lost jobs since April: CMIE

New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS): The number of salaried people losing their jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic has surged to 1.89 crore since April, with around 50 lakh jobs lost last month, according to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

The loss of around 50 lakh jobs in July comes after around 39 lakh jobs were gained in June, as per the data. In April, 1.77 crore salaried jobs were lost, followed by 1 lakh job losses of salaried employees in May.

"While salaried jobs are not lost easily, once lost, they are also far more difficult to retrieve. Therefore, their ballooning numbers are a source of worry," the centre's CEO Mahesh Vyas said.

"Salaried jobs were nearly 19 million (190 lakh) short of their average in 2019-20. They were 22 per cent lower than their level in the last fiscal year," he added.

The latest CMIE data also showed that around 68 lakh daily wage earners lost their jobs during this period. However, around 1.49 crore people took to farming during this period.

Since the lockdown was announced, several companies across sectors have taken to job cuts, along with salary reductions and leave without pay.

Industry bodies and several economists have called for government support to industry to avoid mass job losses and for the companies to survive the onslaught of the pandemic.

Are you consoling us Indians, G. Fernandes ?

Look, Covid-19 had engulfed the Europe and other parts of the nations by Nov. 2019 but India slept through those months till March 22nd to announce Lockdown. It didn't want to show the world that it flopped on Namaste Trump. AND, it didn't want to let one more state (MP) to slip away from it's fingers. Yes, it was too vocal about Tablighi event (that also was pre-fixed as Trump event) but was extremely silent on various celebrations happened in the nation thereafter.

As for the problem related to economy, Indian finance never climbed upwards from 2014. It had already started below zero during the last quarter of 2019. We are such a huge nation - we Indians use 80% of our consumables made in China. Why ? What happened to 'Make in India' ??? How did MMS sail through not one, but two recessions during his time ? If our economy was robust by the last quarter of 2019, negative figures would never have come even during Covid-19 times.

Our vocally loud PM is silent now. Why ??

    Mohan,

From May 2014 to March 2020 all is enveloped within the brackets of Covid-19. Despite the entire nation knowing that by Dec. 2019 our GDP had already slipped into negative counts, the present government is all prepared to ascribe the deterioration of our economy to Covid-19.

They (BJP) didn't do anything wrong, Covid-19 wiped it all away.

Till the time people blindly believe in Modi Govt, it will continue to get worse. Like it or not, of the middle class, 80perc people are going to loose the small little luxuries that they had in the past. What is those luxuries? May be travelling by plane, going for a tour may be as pilgrimage locally interstate, or so. Buying a car or bike, eating out in named fast food joints, getting their kids schooled with dignity, buying some good perfume or clothes or putting some savings as deposits or insurances etc.

What it looks most likely is that, middle class constituting over 55perc of Indias population, now work hand to mouth, with lots of uncertainties and fear.

Modi Govt. if wants could reduce their burden. But, it does not want. There are institutional changes made to push there is no accountability. Only a anandh bhakth wont see it.

No Roshan, there is one ray of hope.

NEP will be put into effect from next year, with so many new universities and autonomous institutions. Fo sure Modi Bhakhts' children will be educated for free in them.

    Jai Modiji...

It's about time for the first crops of the season to come to the market. If many of the redundant people took to farming, there is all possibility that vegetables price will be less this year because of high supply.

Hope for some good news, among all other bad news.
