Suspected Explosive Found on Bangalore - T'puram Kingfisher Flight

Thiruvananthapuram, March 21 (IANS) A security alert was sounded at the airport here Sunday morning after a suspected explosive was found in the cargo compartment of a Kingfisher flight that arrived from Bangalore, police said.

The Kingfisher flight from Bangalore arrived at 8.25 a.m. and a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official found the suspected explosive, which is the size of a cricket ball, wrapped in a newspaper, said City Police Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar.

"This was found in the cargo compartment and the official immediately took it up. It is a suspected explosive and investigations are on," Kumar told reporters here.

The aircraft has been cordoned off and security officials have reached the site, he said.

"We are investigating into how this happened. Certainly this is a security lapse. The suspected explosive is now in the possession of experts and investigations will reveal what exactly it is," Kumar added.

In reply to Mr.Lancelot Tauro's doubts, I would like to clarify as follows:Earlier all check-in baggages were screened in the departure lounge area prior to check-in at the airline counters and a security sticker was placed on the locks of the screened bags. But this practice was stopped due to the folloeing reason.

The security screened baggage used to remain in the possession of the passenger for a long time prior to check-in at the airline counter and thus it was possible for the passenger or some one else to place a prohibited item in the bag before check-in. In the present security friendly system the check-in baggage is placed directly on the weighing scale of the airline check-in counter where it also goes thru a concealed X-RAY machine and if anything objectionable is found the passenger is summoned by the airline security to scruitinise the bag in his presence before releasing the bag for loading on the aircraft. By this new procedure lots of time is saved and also the security is improve. Hope your doubts are cleared now. SAFE FLYING.

Ones the main luggage screening over, it straightway heading to cargo compartment of the flight, nobody access this route other than airport officials or kf officials, either of this two are invovled in this to spoil the image of KF.

Mr.Lancy Moras / Ms. Lydia Lobo - Just FYI At Most International Airports the Customs SCREEN the baggage as soon as it is released from the cargo hold and placed on the conveyor belt prior to the PAX collecting the baggage - if any dutiable items are identified - they put a X mark on the baggage - this will enable the Customs Officer manning the RED or GREEN Channel to either let you off / grill you re the contents of the baggage or Re Xray the baggage - if still in doubt they rummage the bags.

    Mr. Lancy Moras,

It is alright to allow a passenger to walk out of customs without screening his baggage because one cannot make explosives onboard a plane or during immigration check. They screen on arrival especially for dutiable items. The airport you departed has checked your baggage and throughout your journey it was in the possession of the airline.

As for not screening prior to checking-in, it is indeed dangerous.

Shocked for sure. I landed in Mumbai on 11 March at 7 am with a 7 KG hand bag and a baggage of 10 KG and was just asked by the Green Signal Custom Officer (GSCO) to walk out without screening me even though I did not have anything with me. What security do we have at massive airports in INDIA ? I think no one can clear my doubts I bet. So disgusting !!!

Once the bag is released from the check in counter, the bag is screened inline on the way to make up area from where the bag is forwarded to the aircraft. For your information some airports have multilevel inline screening.
