Moodbidri: MITE secures first prize in VTU TEQIP state level project competition 'Avishkar 2020'

Moodbidri, Aug 20: The students of Mangalore Institute of Technology & Engineering, (MITE), here, secured the first prize in the state-level Project Competition AVISHKAR 2020, conducted by the TEQIP Cell of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi.

The project ‘Medical Emergency Drone’, showcased by the students of MITE won the prestigious award out of a total of 350 teams that participated in the competition. The award ceremony was held on August 19 through a virtual mode. The chief guest for the award ceremony was Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, the deputy chief minister and minister of Higher Education, Karnataka. The team members of the project consisted of students of III year Engineering- Lanston Pramith Fernandes and Darren Melroy Menezes of Mechanical Engineering Department, Rashmitha of Information Science & Engineering Department and Nishal K of Electronics & Communication Engineering Department. The team was guided by Dr C R Rajshekhar, vice-principal and head of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The project competition ‘Avishkar’ was conducted by VTU TEQIP cell for the pre-final year UG and PG students involved in technical education. The objective of this event was to promote scientific thinking and bring out innovation to address the modern requirements of society. Students involved in the projects related to the various topics such as women's safety, Swachh Bharath, Swasth Bharath, Digital India, Green energy were encouraged to participate and compete intensely in this event. The competition consisted of a bi-level and final round scrutiny by experts in the above field to bring out the best among the competing teams.

A total of 120 teams were shortlisted for the second round from the participating 350 teams, and the teams that made it through the second level of the event entered the final leg of the competition. Two student teams of MITE had participated in the competition. The award-winning project 'Medical Emergency Drone' (MED) participated in the general category of the event. The project involved meticulous planning, execution and numerous alterations to the prototype during the various stages of development that led to the optimal performance of the final working model. This project aimed to deliver an Automated External Defibrillator in the shortest time to the required location. Data collection by MED from the hospital and execute it on the patient at an optimum time without the necessity of personnel involved is a unique feature attained in this work by the team. This also would facilitate improved survival chances of a patient.

The team also received a cash prize of Rs 25,000. Students of MITE have been consistently winning accolades in the various state and national forums project competition every year. This year, two projects of MITE had also won 'Best Project of the year' in the Karnataka State Council of Science & Technology Project Competition. In addition to regularly winning laurels at project competition conducted by UNISYS, KPIT, KSCST, a total of seven different cars have also participated and won awards at national events every year.

Rajesh Chouta, chairman of MITE commended the students and the project guide for winning the top laurels in the prestigious project competition conducted by the university. He said that MITE has been at the forefront in providing leading technology-enabled learning to its students in Engineering & Management Studies through collaborations with top global companies like SIEMENS, KPIT, UiPath, Rexroth Bosch, Infosys & Carl-Zeiss. This has enabled the students to work on solutions and project ideas for real-world problems. This also has enabled the institute to mentor and groom the students to be ‘Industry Ready’. Also, recently, MITE had secured the III position at the national level 2020 RPA Challenge conducted by UiPath.

With a new BE Course in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning introduced this year, MITE is offering quality education in eight engineering streams including Computer Science & Engineering, Information Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering with accreditations from NAAC and NBA. Dr G L Eashwara Prasad, principal, in his press release also congratulated all the students and faculty for this commendable achievement.
