Mangaluru: Manipal College of Dental Sciences celebrates 'Oral Hygiene Day'

Mangaluru, Aug 21: Manipal College of Dental Sciences, here celebrated ‘Oral Hygiene DAY’ on August 1.

Oral Hygiene Day celebrations are held all over the country to commemorate the ‘birth anniversary of Dr G B Shankwalkar’ who is the doyen of Indian Periodontics and also the founder of the Indian Society of Periodontology. As part of this celebration, multiple programmes were held to spread awareness among the public regarding the importance of oral hygiene in maintaining good oral health.

The department of Periodontics, under the able guidance of Dr Ashita Uppoor and Dr Neetha J Shetty, organized a virtual elocution competition for the students of Manipal School, Mangaluru. This competition on 'Healthy Gums, Healthy Teeth' saw enthusiastic participation from the students.

Educating and motivating talks were shared by Dr Mranali Shetty, Dr David and Dr Sangeeta Nayak. Dr Deepa Kamath and Dr Swati were also part of the programme.



Ashwini Rao, Professor, department of Public Health Dentistry had a tough time judging the young contestants as each was better than the other. Eshal Faisal of grade IX, Nakshatra B of grade VI and Abdul Wahhab Muhammad of grade III were declared winners in their respective categories.

Ira Jain, a student of grade VII said, “The oral health talk was very informative and interesting. All the tips given by the doctor were explained clearly and can be followed on a daily basis. I really liked the talk.”

Aishwarya Kamath, another student of grade VII said, “I was glad to refresh the oral health knowledge that I had, to learn and adopt something new in my daily routine. The right diet helps us to maintain good oral hygiene. It was really beneficial to know that oral health has an effect on our overall health. I will advise everyone to give significance to their oral health.”

“We sincerely appreciate the competition that was conducted for students. The talks delivered by the doctors were also very informative. My children enjoyed being part of this virtual programme,” said Farahnaz, parent of Faiz, a student from grade III.

Manipal School, admissions manager Rakshitha Kishan and school nurse, Divya K L coordinated the programme.
