Crude oil is at its lowest. et the govt increases excise on petrol n diesel. It does not make sense..when you can bring down the price, why burden the people in such hard times?? Why this vindictive attitude?

For last 6 years, Govt and Oil Marketing Companies have been making huge windfall gains. The BJP Government in total would have made a profit of Rs 20 lakh crores by charging exorbitant taxes on petrol-diesel.

The Center could have reduced petrol prices by Rs 25 per litre if it wanted to benefit common people. With base price at less than Rs20, Indians now pay 300% in taxes to government on every liter.

When the UPA-I came to power in May 2004, the price of petrol in Delhi was Rs. 33.71 per litre. Ten years on, when Narendra Modi took over as the PM in May 2014, petrol was priced at Rs. 71.41 per litre in the national capital.

In 2014, the excise duty on per litre of petrol and diesel were Rs 9.48 and Rs 3.56 respectively. This has risen to Rs 32 per litre for petrol and Rs 31.83 for diesel (a hike of around 137%). A recent report by Care Ratings noted that the Central government now collects around 270 per cent taxes on the base price of petrol and 256 per cent in the case of diesel.
