Lucknow, March 24 (IANS) Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav has said the women's reservation bill, if passed, would "provoke young men to whistle" in parliament.
Asked to comment on the women's reservation bill, he told a TV channel here Tuesday, "If the women's reservation bill were to be passed in its existing form, it would result in flooding the parliament and state legislatures with wives of government officials and women connected with big industrial houses, thereby provoking young men to indulge in eve-teasing."
Expressing shock and dismay over the remark, state ruling party chief and cooperatives minister Swami Prasad Maurya said in a statement issued here late night: "Such a remark simply reflects the utter contempt and disrespect that the SP chief has for women ; it is really shocking".
Former Lucknow University vice chancellor Prof. Roop Rekha Verma, who is also a women's activist, termed Mulayam's remark as "ridiculous" and "disgusting".
