Udupi, Mar 27: “The public has been complaining about the excesses of coal-based Nagarjuna thermal power plant functioning under Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) in Nandikoor–Yellur, near here.  If these are proven, then I would join the people’s struggle in addressing the various issues that are of concern to them”, warned Sri Vishweshateerta Swami of Pejavar Mutt.

Swami Vishweshateerta was touring the neighbourhood of Nandikoor– Yellur, where the test run of the power plant has been going on for the past few weeks, to listen to grievances of local residents.

The locals are facing noise pollution as the test runs are being done at the plant.  The effluents discharged by the plant have contaminated the water sources in wells and natural ponds, which are showing salinity.

The Swamiji first visited the underground storage facility of ashes, which is inappropriately underway on 120 acres of land near Santoor, Mudarangady.

He also visited a few families in Nandikoor and tasted the well water that was high in saline content.  Meanwhile, he assured the local residents that he would bring this issue to the attention of the state administration.

Addressing media persons, Swami Vishweshateerta said that the locals alleged that Nagarjuna is cheating them and is operating without valid licenses issued by the local administration.
The copies of licenses were submitted to him after much persuasion.  The papers have been given to experts to ascertain their genuineness. Meanwhile, he said that he will join the people’s struggle to get them justice against Nagarjuna if they are proven of wrongdoing.

“I am aware of a breach of legal provisions by not awarding compensation to the displaced families, oppression against innocents, and illiterate locals”, said the Swamiji.  He also advised that a local committee be formed to pursue their cause with the state administration.

He further added, “It’s not proven whether the thermal power plant executed by Nagarjuna endangers the eco environment.  The issue will be discussed with the experts.  If the wrongdoings of Nagarjuna are proved, I will lead the struggle of locals”.

A few anti-Nagarjuna activists explained to the Swamiji about the breach of many clauses by the company. The Swamiji assured them that further steps will be taken after reviewing every issue.

Coal-laden Trucks Take Cover of Forest:

After the truck drivers saw the Swamiji from a distance, they diverted their coal-laden trucks into the dense vegetation along the road, where the truck would not be easily spotted.

As per the rules, Nagarjuna is not allowed to transport coal by road to the plant.  However, their coal-laden trucks ply on these rural roads in connivance with the local police and local transporters.  The coal dust of coal has  spread all along the road which proves that it has been going on for many months.

If company is constructed eco friendly then it is ok and must be accepted by all villagers around the Nagarjuna Power Plant. But this company does'nt have any rules and regulations to maintain our environment which is now already polluting day by day. If we doesn't get any power from it, then why should we bear all these horrible disturbances ? Sea the seashore of Yermal Thenka. Everything has gone wrongly used by the power of Central Government Permissions. Whom to ask about the problems created by the company. If u ask the person who is undertaking some works which is related to nagarjuna, he says that I am a contractor, I dont't have any idea about this. So be united to dare to fight against this company. They do not pay any value for workers who died incidently when the work is going on. Our leaders are shameless people. They want only money either direct or indirect route from this company. And this is the fact that each and every leader who headed the strike against this company had received a bulk amount of money and kept quite and resided in a peaceful area. Now your die or live, that is not their question. Rise u r voice against this. Do not keep quite. For how many days u will keep quite by bearing these problems?????????

Dakshina Kannada & Udupi dist are not the right place for Power Plant or big Industries. The reason is our place is dominated by Nature. It is a God's Gift.Do you know what happened to Brahmavar Sugar Factory? Beautiful forest was razed to ground.Big sugar factory was built.Rest is history. Hope same thing will not happen again. Let forest, river be there.

Nobody wants pollution but everybody wants power, fuel and other amenities. Pollution is part of developement and there is no such thing as pollution free industries. when there is power cut , we blame the authorities , every body wants cheap petrol but not the refineries in their back yards. time to change the mind set.if you want AC , cars etc then all industries that are required to produce this will pollute. why should industries be in far flung villages when they are not meant to serve the villages. clean environment for the cities and pollute the villages!. not right

If environmental protection systems are not in place. The power plant shall not be allowed to start. We need power but not at the cost of environment. These companies are not doing a charity by setting up the power plant and hence let them comply to international standards of pollution.

It is very easy to write about the shortage and necessity of power from the comforts of the a/c rooms of the gulf and western countries but what the residents are going thru with the deafening noise and ground shaking can only be experienced by us living in the vicinity. Let some of the readers who comment on each and every topic come for a day and experience it and then pass comments. of course we still don,t have power for 16 to 20 hours in a day.

True, power is very important for our growth. However, it needs to be achieved by adhering to the law and by compensating people for the loss of land/occupation. So power companies cannot and should not take these people for a ride.

The damage to enviroment can be effectively controlled/reduced by using gas turbines instead of coal based. We need cleaner air, pollution free environment and also need power/energy. Both are important and cant be compromised. But for the future of our planet, its people, the govt must reconsider using gas and not coal, I am sure the govt can. Economic viability should not be the deciding factor, but environment safety must be the priority..All political parties and all communuties should support this action of swami, if his intentions are for the welfare of the people and earth.

Development of any state depends on infrastructure, so power is the important infrastructure. We all crib at the govt if there is power cut, please understand power cannot be generated in our backyard, either it shoudl be generated thru coal, nuclear, or hydro. The last option we cannot as we dont have Watre falls in Mnagalore, it can be only nuclear or thermal.Theraml is much much safer than nuclear power generation.

Only thing is co- operation from Company and the loclas to minimise the polluction, proper safety incorporation, stop unauthorised activities(shortcuts).Everybody praises about GUJRATH being teh most developed state, no power cuts, most industries, highest industry output, this has all come at some cost, so please bear all this, power is very very important.
