New Zealand reports 5 new Covid-19 cases

Wellington, Sep 2 (IANS): New Zealand on Wednesday reported five new coronavirus cases -- two in managed isolation facilities and three linked to the Auckland cluster -- taking the overall infections in the country to 1,406.

Of the two cases, one is a woman in her 30s who arrived from Dubai on August 28 and the other one is a child who landed in New Zealand from Uzbekistan via Dubai also on the same day, Xinhua news agency quoted the Health Ministry as syaing.

Both patients were transferred to the Auckland quarantine facility, it added.

The three community cases are all epidemiologically linked to the Mount Roskill Evangelical Church, which has been genomically linked to the larger Auckland cluster.

They were already identified as close contacts and in self-isolation, according to the Ministry of Health.

"Since August 11, our contact tracing team has identified 3,192 close contacts of cases, of which 2,992 have been contacted and are self-isolating, and we are in the process of contacting the rest," Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a daily Covid-19 briefing.

New Zealand's largest city Auckland entered a lower level of Covid-19 restrictions on Monday, allowing people to get in and out of the city, sparking concerns of further spreading the virus as some Aucklanders flew to resorts such as Queenstown in the South Island.

Face coverings such as masks became compulsory on public transport across New Zealand from Monday.
