Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 2: In the last two days, Kerala state has been witnessing a series of violent incidents after two Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists were murdered. Mullappally Ramachandran, the state Congress president asked the CPI (M) leadership to restrain its workers as at least 140 party offices and memorials were reportedly vandalised.

Former youth Congress general secretary and PCC member, G Leena's house in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram was also attacked in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2. She and her minor son suffered minor injuries in the attack. Upon hearing the incident, former chief minister Oommen Chandy and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala visited her house.

The state was gripped with tension after the murder of the two young DYFI activists, Mithilaj (30) and Mohammad Haq (28) on Sunday. Congress claimed that the murder was a result of gang rivalry between the two groups while CPI (M) pressed it to be revenge politics. CCTV footage showed that the deceased also had lethal weapons during the attack.

PCC chief Mullappally insisted the murder resulted due to gang rivalry and alleged that the blame on Congress for the incident was to divert the attention from the gold smuggling case and other corrupt deals. “The state is witnessing government-sponsored violence. Police remain, mute spectators, while CPI (M) workers target Congress offices. More than 140 party offices were vandalized,” he said.
