Demonetisation was attack on India's unorganised economy: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS): In his persistent attack on the union government over the economy, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi released his second video on Thursday and alleged that demonetisation was an attack on India's poor -- farmers, labourers, small shopkeepers -- the unorganised sector.

Gandhi said "demonetisation did not erase the black money as it was claimed by the Prime Minister and it did not benefit the poor. The advantage was given to India's biggest billionaires".

In a video, Rahul sought to explain his contention, and said: "The money that you had in your pockets, that you had in your homes was taken and used by the government to waive off the debts of these people.

"Demonetisation was to wipe out cash from the system and due to this informal sector has suffered because the unorganised economy runs on cash. Whether it is a small shopkeeper, farmer or labourer, he or she works with cash.

"The second goal of demonetisation aimed to wipe out cash from the system, including from the informal or unorganised sectors. The Prime Minister himself said that he wanted a cashless India, a cashless Hindustan," said Rahul.

"In cashless India, the informal sector will be destroyed. And the farmers, labourers, small shopkeepers, small and medium businesses, who were dependent on cash, cannot live without cash," the congress leader added.

The Congress on Monday had attacked the Centre soon after the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) plunged to (-) 23.9 per cent during the first quarter of the financial year 2020-21 saying the "fake narrative" had exploded.

"The CSO has released the provisional estimates of GDP for the quarter April-June 2020. And the GDP in the first quarter has declined by a whopping 23.9 per cent," said former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram addressing a virtual press conference.

"It means, about one quarter of the gross domestic output as on June 30 has been wiped out in the last 12 months. Another way of looking at it is, since the end of 2019-20, the gross domestic output has fallen by about 20 per cent," he added.

Taking a swipe at the government, Chidambaram added: "The Finance Minister who blamed an 'Act of God' for the economic decline should be grateful to the farmers and the gods who blessed the farmers. As the only sectors that have grown at 3.4 per cent are Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery."

The facts remains that economy was becoming consistently weaker after demonetization. Look at the quarterly GDP and see for yourselves; its bones were already in bad shape, and the unplanned lockdown made things far worse. What is even more terrible, is that the government is now cash-strapped, unwilling to put money into the hands of the poor to drive demand, and is thinking about spending the remaining when the virus starts to recede. What we do not know is when the disease will depart. It may be the end of this year or next year.

Truth is bitter, further, when it comes from a person hated by Bhakths and Media, it is going to get into a position of ridicule, because he speaks truth. With fudged vedio and fake narratives, BJP IT Cell has ensured, everything bhakths read or get is cooked up version, ridiculing RaGa and praising Modi. Unless, they find the original version of his speeches, they won't be able to appreciate for sure.

Economy is in deep deep trouble. It does not matter who says what. But, what matters is who is right and who is wrong. Right now it is absolutely clear that RaGa is right, like many of the economists who quit, trying to wake Modi Govt.

Ok. We heard you. But tell us what you have done better to avoid all such issues? Tell the solution or alternate not the problems. Nobody in Cong has the answer. This is why Cong campaigners dread to visit 'house to house' pre election time. They are confronted with questions like. .''What has your party or leaders done? What and how do you intend to do? '' . Dont expect votes if you do not have the answer to these questions.

Come on yaar. Lost count on how many times you ranted this . Instead of attacking Modi, Congress needs to build alternative positive narration. The fake Gandhi family needs to step aside and pass on baton to worthy elected successor and give him time to build his team and plan to take on Modi in 2024 .Attacking Modi is a tested and failed policy, which will just give u 40-50 seats in elections! .

One if the reasons for india to survive the recession of late 2000's was because India was a cash based and not credit based economy with people having cash in hand. Demonetisation changed that. Unnecessary move by GOI.
