Myanmar govt repatriates over 13,300 citizenz


Yangon, Sep 3 (IANS): The Myanmar government has repatriated 13,364 stranded citizens so far since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

On Wednesday night, 92 Myanmar nationals arrived at the Yangon International Airport by relief flights, reports Xinhua news agency.

The returnees, including seamen, arrived from Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Pakistan, Germany, the UK, Israel and Russia.

Due to the suspension of international commercial flights due to the pandemic, the government has been repatriating its citizens stranded in foreign countries by relief or special flights.

The returnees will be put under facility quarantine in Yangon region for 21 days.

As part of containment measures against Covid-19, the Myanmar government has extended the effective period of temporary entry restrictions for incoming visitors and suspension of operating international air services until September 30.

Myanmar has reported 1,058 confirmed cases with six deaths as of Thursday, according to the latest figures released by the Health and Sports Ministry.
