Bengaluru, Sep 3: Among those who ended their lives in the state, people who had education between the first and tenth standard outnumbered the people with higher education or illiterates.

During the year 2019, 11,288 persons had committed suicide in Karnataka. 7,542 from among them had education between the first and eighth standards. 1,383 were illiterates, 1,466 were educated till PU, 177 were diploma/IT educated, 525 were degree holders while 40 were postgraduates, 177 were diploma holders or ITI - educated, as per the details released by the National Crime Records Bureau.

The report points out that at the country level too, those who underwent co-education till SSLC (59.2 per cent) were more prone to end lives. Illiterates accounted for 12.6 per cent. As far as suicide is concerned, 12.6 per cent were illiterates. Meanwhile, the age group of people committing suicides in the country were between 18 and 30.

At the same time, suicides in the state have come down. 11,561 and 11,288 deaths were reported during 2018 and 2019 with a reduction of 24 per cent. States like Bihar (44.7 per cent), Punjab (37.5 per cent), and Uttarakhand (22.6) have high rates of suicides. As far as Karnataka is concerned, 1,293 among them were unemployed, 2,161 were self-employed, 2,458 were farmers, and 1,631 were daily wage earners.

In the country as a whole, 23.4 per cent coolies, 15.4 per cent housewives, 11.6 per cent self-employed and 10.1 per cent unemployed took away their lives. Out of them, 32.4 per cent were frustrated because of family issues, 17.1 per cent because of failing health. Maharashtra recorded highest suicides of 18,916, while Tamil Nadu with 13,493 suicides is in the second place, followed by West Bengal where over 12,000 cases are reported. Madhya Pradesh with 12,457 suicides is in the fourth place followed by Karnataka 11,288. Telangana with 7,675 suicides and Andhra Pradesh with 6,465 suicides are in later spots.
