US Open 2020: Zvonareva & Siegemund win women's double title

New York, Sep 12 (IANS): Playing in their first-ever tournament together, unseeded partners Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva clinched the 2020 US Open women's doubles trophy after registering a straight-set win over Nicole Melichar of the US and Xu Yifan of China.

The unseeded tandem defeated the third-seeded opponents 6-4, 6-4 in 79 minutes on Friday afternoon to claim the title at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The victory in the final completed the run for the champions, who had never played together prior to this event. Siegemund and Zvonareva swept to victory in the final by breaking their opponents' serves three times; they also got 73 pe cent of their first serve points into play, and won nearly 80 per cent of points when they did that.

"(It's a) special two weeks for me because I've been away from the tour for a long time," Zvonareva said after lifting the trophy as per the official tournament website.

"I haven't played a lot of back-to-back matches, I would say, at the same tournament...I think one of the most important things is that I was enjoying my time on the court with Laura. She made me feel good on the court. She was very supportive. I think that helped us a lot to get through some tough matches."

This is the first-ever major women's doubles title for Siegemund, who won the 2016 mixed doubles title at Flushing Meadows, with Mate Pavic.
