Mangalore: Pejavar Mutt Swamiji Voices Dissent Over Land Bank Project

Mangalore, Apr 3: Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swami of Pejavar Mutt opposed the land bank project proposed by the state chief minister, in a protest organized by the environmental and social organizations here on Saturday April 3, by stating that the land bank project is targeted at attracting industrialists, but acquiring fertile agriculture land for the industries should not happen in the coastal district.
Addressing protesters in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in the city, he said that the lands in the district have been targeted by industrialists and the Special Economic Zone, and due to this, farmers are losing their livelihood. “It is not only a question of losing land but also losing of culture, tradition, and lifestyle of the region”, he said.
“If the land bank project is established and it starts acquiring agricultural land, I will take the decision to start an indefinite fast”, said the Swamiji.
Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, after his meeting in Mumbai, said that several industrialists from the metro are interested in investing in the state and land banks will be established in districts to provide them land to establish their industries. As per the chief minister’s statement, the land banks will acquire the land to allot industries.
“I had a meeting with chief minister B S Yeddyurappa on MSEZ a month ago and was assured of a detailed discussion soon. During that time I will urge for protection of the farmers’ interests as well as agricultural land”, he said.
The protest was organized by Nagarika Seva Trust, Guruvayanakere, and other environmental and social organizations to demand protection of land, culture, and tradition of the coastal district.
Sri Mohanadasa Swami of Shri Dhama, Manila, Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swami of Sandipani Mutt, and others along with leaders and members of organizations participated in the whole day’s protest held at Nehru Maidan in the city.
