Bangalore, Apr 5: Proving many political pundits wrong, the BJP rose to power in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, bagging 98 seats in the 198-seat corporation. As the local MLAs and MPs too have a right to vote in the council election, the BJP has been assured of a clear majority in this civic body.
Yeddyurappa’s plans to postpone hiking the water rates and milk prices till the conclusion the BBMP election, seem to have borne fruits. As at 12.35 pm, the party’s tally stood at 98, as against 59 of the Congress, and 12 of the JDS. Independents have bagged six seats.
The debacle of the JDS, which expected to ride high on the issue of Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises by rallying around thousands of farmers against this project, has given rise to fresh worries for JDS supremo, Deve Gowda, and his sons, Revanna and Kumaraswamy. The BJP leaders, who expected to suffer a bit because of the low voter turn out, are smiling broadly.
It now remains to be seen as to whether Yeddyurappa will be able to lift Bangalore to the international standards as promised by him.
