Kundapur: Damaged, brittle cement pipes used for highway widening work

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapour (SP)

Kundapur, Sep 29: Development work on Byndoor - Virajpet state highway is going on between Halady and Madamakki villages near Belve in the taluk. However, the people are aggrieved at the fact the contractor has been using huge damaged, brittle cement pipes for the works.

Vehicles of pilgrims who want to visit Kollur, Sringeri, Dharmasthala, Subrahmanya etc and also auto-rickshaws, private vehicles and heavy vehicles use this road.

The giant pipes being used for the development works are visibly damaged. Concrete has peeled off at different places and the iron mesh has been protruding at several places. It can clearly be seen that at some spots where the cement has peeled off, the spots have been concealed by applying some cement. One of these pipes has already been inserted under the highway on one side. When the road is widened, there will be more vehicular movement and there are chances of the already damaged pipes crashing under the weight of heavy vehicles. The road users and vehicle riders have demanded that only high-quality cement pipes are used for culverts on this road.

PWD assistant engineer Kundapur, Harshvardhan, said that he has information about damaged cement pipes being used for culvert for state highway expansion work. He said he will visit the spot to inspect the same and further steps will be taken thereafter.

Shobakka will be happy to get AMC of the state highway. Don't worry Modi will definitely come in Mangalore before election. That is more than enough to win all BJP MP and MLA s.

The photograph is a clear indication of improper cement concrete mixture. Exposed reinforcement rods is a criminal offense because it can lead to rusting in no time even before it is used and will break open the pipe wall. As per standards, the concrete mix used has to be subjected to block test and only if it passes the test, the pipes have to be used. If there is no certificate of block test from approved lab, the pipes have to be rejected. The raw materials used for construction of pipes also need to be certified. Sand has to be free from salt, cement has to be of require grade and at least of ISI mark, stones have to be washed before use, steel has to be of required grade with test certificate from mill. Unfortunately our Government agencies, engineers do not bother about these things. End result is, the life of such construction will be very very short.

Don't know if it's National or State Highway but there is no difference, both are same govt. Yesterday our PM was saying protest against farm bill was because the source of Black Money is blocked. What happening here with the money given to purchase new pipe ? Made Black and used second pipes for the highway work ?

    Wah Modiji, Wah !
