Kaup, Oct 5: Kaup municipality has been moving forward in the direction of entering into an arrangement with private road construction firms to process plastic waste and convert it into tar that can be used for laying roads.

Kaup municipality was formed four years back. It did not have proper space for disposing of waste. Everyday waste is bifurcated and collected into dry and wet waste. They were sorted and the waste that can be recycled was sold. The other waste was segregated into landfill and those which can be disposed of by incineration.

Disposal of waste is a financial burden for the municipality. In the past, plastic waste was sent to cement factories for combustion but because cement factories are located far off, transportation cost was huge. Now, Ramanath Laxman, an entrepreneur from Bengaluru, has joined hands with the municipality to use the waste. Ramnath Laxman has undertaken construction of over 400 km of road by using tar made out of plastic waste in tune with Swachh Bharat and self-reliant concepts. For plastic waste, Kaup municipality has set up a shredder machine for using plastic to make tar. As the cost of managing the shredder and transportation of waste are met by the recycling persons, the municipality can avoid financial burden. Moreover, the quantity of waste being sent to the Yellur waste unit for landfill will come down drastically. Presently, the disposal of waste is limited to the waste collected at the SKRM unit, and in later days, it may expand the operations to make it economically profitable.

Venkatesh Navada, chief officer of Kaup, says that for the first time, without the use of government grant, the processing unit was set up in Kaup for the first time in the entire state. He said that because of this project, waste is disposed of without expenses and pollution control is also possible.
