Mangalore, Apr 21: A tanker trailer carrying Indane gas from MRPL here to Bangalore overshot the edge of the national highway between Nanthoor in the city and Pumpwell Circle at around 12.30 am on Wednesday April 21, and rolled on to a pathway located  a few feet below the road, resting on its side in the bargain.

The driver of the tanker was injured in the accident. Due to the impact of the accident, there was gas leakage from the tanker. Fire tenders were summoned, and the firemen worked tirelessly to avert a major tragedy. Supply of electricity was cut for a radius of about five kms from the spot immediately after the accident, as a precautionary measure to avoid fire hazards.

After assessing the pros and cons, the work of transferring of the cooking gas from the fallen tanker began at around 5 am today. The task is continuing, and is expected to be concluded later in the day. In the meantime, the fire brigade personnel have been ensuring that the leaking gas does not give rise to any major fire mishap, by continuously keeping the area wet with water jets.

After the accident, traffic between the Pumpwell-Nanthoor stretch of national highway 17 has been suspended. The road will be open for traffic only after the gas is removed completely from the tanker and the fire brigade and the MRPL teams give their clearance.

    Dear Jossey Saldanha,
In HPCL its filled through machinery with high pressure to one tanker, but in this spot they cannot get that pressure. The pressure inside empty tanker is more hence it cannot be filled compltely so it might take 2 or more than two tanker to offload depending upon the atmospheric pressure outside. If you dont know please ask some body dont comment .

The nanthoor to pumpwell stretch is definitely in a mess, craters dot the surface, with shody tarmac work. The fault also lies with the ill maintained prime mover, which can be observed in the pictures, in an age of modernised prime movers, we are still satisfied in using decades old leyland prime movers, uncontrollable rattling moster, you get to see a plenty in the ghats and arround MRPL. Its the 'chaltha hai' attitude thats ingrained in all of us indians. given the situation the administration has indeed done a good job ensure a safe reclaim of the LPG from the mangled propane tank.

Jossey Saldanha, good observation if you see these pictures one finds lot of Unsafe acts
a)Officers /police with helmet -Poor people who are conatining the risk are without any safety protection.
One of the pic. the TVS rider is really following rules ( wearing helmet) & looks like police enjoying by sprying at him. They have not properly isolated the area , all vehicles are moving nearby & people taking picture. These are source of fire in case they fail to stop leak. In India basic safety never been followe anywhere which is the result many acciden.

@Mr. Jossey Kemmannu: if you read the news carefully you would get to see the message that " the work of transferring of the cooking gas from the fallen tanker began " so these 2 tanks are engaged in this task...

Jossey, they are not stupid. I guess they are transferring gas from the tanker involved in the accident to other tankers to avert further mishaps. It is the most sensible thing to do. What else are they supposed to do? Let the gas leak?

Our infrastructure facilities and all other amenities for better standard of life go hand in hand with the growth of population and our progress in life. MRPL is expanding their production facilities to suit with the demand of gas from the public. The highway safety and security and all the required standards of broad and safer roads have to be provided for safe mobility and transportation of people and goods. The roadways from Mangalore to Bangalore via Shiradi Ghats or Charmadi Ghats are scenic and beautiful but they are certainly narrow and dangerous.

These roads are never improved for decades. All the taxation and toll fees levied for transportation has to be equated with the provision of safe and suitabel roads, othewise the hazards and dangers are likely to cause harm for human lives and human needs. The authorities have to wake up and provide justice and timely precautions because India has all the wise men and women who are educated and compensated to do their job in the interest of the people who elect them and them to do their responsible job for the welfare of the nation. One gets scared to travel on those roads !!

    Mr. Jawar,

Dont worry of explosion since the pressure inside the tank more that the atm. pressure. Please always dont blame on the big vehicle drivers. Actually the accident occured when the tanker driver was avoiding the collision with n car comming towards it.

Thank God it did not explode these tanker's should be allowed to ply at a maximum speed of 60 Kms so that no accident's happen. This is a case of rash driving where the driver could not control the vehicle.

The drivers of these tankers are very expert and few of them drive quite rash on national highways particularly when returning back with empty tankers. They are big hindrance on highways due to their length and moreover they don't have respect for the small car drivers stuck behind them. RTO should put a check on those rash tanker drivers because they are carrying highly inflammable liquid petroleum on busy highways which is passing through populated towns and villages.
