Father, daughter washed away in Chittoor stream

Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh), Oct 23 (IANS): A man and his daughter died after they were washed away in a stream while returning from a wedding in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Pratap (45) and his daughter Sai Vineeta (15) had hitched a return ride in a fellow wedding guest's car on Thursday night. As they approached a stream near Kalikirikonda, which was in spate due to heavy rains, they did not stop and went ahead.

"From 8 p.m. on Thursday to 2 a.m. on Friday, there was torrential downpour, resulting in the stream gushing with water, which swept away the car," a police officer told IANS.

Incidentally, the deceased duo from Vaddivarlapalli village was only some 6-7 km away from home when the accident occurred in the dead of the night amid pounding rain.

Though Penumuru police and local villagers launched a hunt for Prakash and Vineeta, they could not retrieve them, considering the difficult conditions.

Pratap's wife Shyamala, the driver of the car and the guest managed to escape the fatal water currents.

The accident occurred in the stream near the Kondayyagaripalli village and the rescuers later found a white car with broken windshield.

The police have registered a case under CrPC Section 171. According to the police, Prakash was a farmer.

In a separate incident in Palamaner in the same district, a woman and her son died after drowning in a river while taking selfies.
