Mangaluru, Oct 29: The city corporation here, which has strictly implemented the segregation of garbage into wet waste and dry waste in the city limits has also decided that similar steps should also to be enforced in Bantwal, Ullal, and 15 gram panchayats which dump their waste at Pachanady.
The general session of the municipal council here was held on Wednesday October 28. It was chaired by city mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar. The mayor said that waste brought to Pachanady without proper segregation will not be allowed to be unloaded.
City corporation commissioner, Akshy Shridhar, speaking on the occasion, said that sorted waste alone is being collected from all houses. He said that the respective administrative bodies will be intimated by letter to do the needful and they will also be reminded to pay the balance amount payable by them to the city corporation.
Former mayor Divakar said that the government has released compensation for the people affected by Pachanady landslide. Another former mayor, Bihaskar K wanted the affected people to be provided with houses without rent and that compensaiton should be disbursed without discrimination.
Leader of the opposition, Abdul Ravoof, sought action against officials because of whom compensation payment to affected people of Mandara was delayed and the high court censured the corporation. He sought action against officials responsible for this situation. When BJP member, Sudhir Shetty Kannur said that the problem at the dumping yard has aggravated because of garbage coming from outside and that six lac metric tonnes of waste had accumulated at Pachanady. Congress members, Abdul Ravoof and Shasidhar Hegde suggested to ban entry of waste from outside the corporation limits.
The corporation commissioner noted that implementation of the new rule immediately will cause problems for these local bodies. He said letters will be sent by giving them a deadline for sorting of waste after which date unsorted garbage would be rejected. He also said that they will be asked to remit the balance amount payable by them to the city corporation in this respect.
