Udupi, May 1: Udupi Zilla Swabhimani Mahila Okkuta, women’s organization was inaugurated at Hotel Ramakrishna here on Saturday May 1.

Writer and progressive thinker Sara Aboobaker after inaugurating the organization said that there are a lot of pro-women organizations, but none seem to be working for women empowerment. She further hoped that the okkuta may not mirror the same and work for the emancipation of women at large.

Regretting the rising trend of people being recognized through their religious identity, Sara said that religions we belonged to was not given importance while we were in school and all of us treated each other equally. However, today it is unfortunate that one’s religious identity looms large in all walks of life, she said and added that this can be attributed to certain vested interests.

Veteran thinker G Rajashekar spoke about the problems faced by the women in coastal areas, while advocate Shyamala Bhandary spoke about the law enforced for the protection of women.

Dalita Mahila Okkuta president Sundari, Puttur presided. Okkuta members Sharada Moodushagri and Vanajakshi were present.

Glad to learn about the beginning of Udupi Zilla Swabhimani Mahila Okkuta. Sara Abubakkar has rightly pointed out the fact that the vested interests play a destructive role using the religious identity as a tool to subjugate women. The final implication of such efforts is to claim that the feminine identity of a woman is worthless and thus she needs a much-celebrated religious identity. I wish the Okkuta may be able to counter such false claims and subvert the power politics of our society. Good luck UZSMO...
