Kasab to Hang for 26/11 Terror Strike

Mumbai, May 6 (IANS) Pakistani national Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone gunman captured alive during the Mumbai terror attack, was Thursday sentenced to death by a special court, which ruled that he did not have any right to live. He has been given death on four counts, including waging war against India, murder and indulging in terrorist activities.

Kasab, who was convicted on 86 counts, was also sentenced to life imprisonment on five counts.

The 23-year-old from a village in Pakistan's Punjab broke down as Special Judge M.L. Tahaliyani read out the sentence.

"To be hanged by the neck till death," the judge said after each of the four counts for which he sent Kasab to the gallows.

Tahaliyani said the common man would lose faith in the court if Kasab was given life. "The death sentence is required," he said as he wound up his statement and added that Kasab did not have the right to live.

The special court also complimented the entire police team of investigators for their work in investigating the case and appreciated the strong evidence collected against Kasab, Roy told reporters.

Soon after pronouncing the judgement, when Kasab was asked if he had anything to say, he folded his hands and stood quietly - indicating as if the ruling was acceptable to him.

The judge said during the proceedings that Kasab could go out for some time if he wanted water. When Kasab returned to the court, he had tears in his eyes.

The judge also asked the media not to leave the room.

In his indictment, Tahaliyani said that Kasab volunteered to be a mujahideen. He was accompanied by nine men and had indiscriminately fired at innocents.

Kasab was looking down all the while. The judge also asked the defence lawyer whether the terrorist would like to say something. Kasab shook his head, and the judge asked him again in Hindi.

Even as he expressed joy over the death sentence awarded to Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab, public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said terror had no religion.

"They represent no religion," Nikam told reporters, and called terrorists enemies of humanity.

In his first reactions, police officer Roy said: "We welcome this verdict. This was an important investigation. It is an important trial for our democracy."

"I am happy with the judgement," a triumphant Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam declared. "This case was a challenge to us," Nikam, who came out of the court flashing a V sign, told reporters, adding that capital punishment would help heal the wounds of the victims of the terror attack by Pakistani terrorists.

While convicting him Monday, the judge had ruled that Kasab was guilty of directly killing seven people and a total of 59 with associate Abu Ismail, who was shot dead after running into a police picket at Girgaun Chowpatty early Nov 27 - shortly after the terror assault began in the heart of India's financial capital on Nov 26 night.

His conviction was based on CCTV footage showing him striding across the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus with an AK-47 and a backpack.

The 60-hour audacious attack that began on the night of Nov 26, 2008 and went on till the afternoon of Nov 29, 2009 was carried out by 10 Pakistani terrorists including Kasab.

They targeted sites like the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, the iconic Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, the nearby Hotel Oberoi-Trident, the Cama Hospital and the Chabad House, a Jewish prayer centre, and Leopold Café, a hangout popular with Indians and foreigners.

    Hi all,
I feel he shud be punished but lets have a look in how much Indian govt wasted in investing and comforting him in the jail?everybody forgot this? why shud a prisoner be given so much of comfort?did he deserve that?According to me he shud be put in some place where he shud serve old and poor and sick people and hanged after years of serving INDIA that shud be the punishment.and dont forget there vwere indians also with the help of whom terrorism enters India else its not possible for others outside INDIA to get into our country.Check out those things instead of having fun of the crime! so i feel hanging is the easiest punishment and common one. he shud serve first and then hanged.

Good. Just hanging in confinement shall not do the justice to the victims of 26/11. Please bring him to the VT/Taj/Cama hospital where he did the brutal act. Let him remind him of his grave crimes. First cut his both hands at VT, then take him to Cama hospital, cut his legs, then take him to Taj, cut his thighs and bring him back to VT square and hang till death in presence of public. Let the footage be viewed by his countrymen and prospective terrorists. No one should dare to attack India.

I am waiting for his death penalty to be executed at the earliest. Sooner is better. Now Kasab should be the first to one to face gallows, followed by Afzal Guru, then others. After his ution, he shud not be buried in India, nor his dead body to be given to wild animlas of India. His body wrapped in a gunny bag, should be sent to deep sea and thrown into the sea so that shark or other big fishes eat him. He is a sinner to india and no to be buried in Indian soil if we want to do justice to mother India.

No, I disagree. He is a human being who did something terrible, something unthinkable.
Every Indian should be given an opportunity to take a pick at him ! Hanging is way too soft. Let the family of the people killed by him or affected by him do their will with him, capture it in a video and stream it over the news channels and media.

A fair trial is given to Kasab who is a terrorist. Judgement has come in quick time. A death sentence is given - worth it.

Now it is to be seen when he will be hanged? Perhaps not in the near future if he goes on appeal to higher courts and then to Supreme Court and for Mercy Petition to President. Then 20 to 30 years will lapse, even more years and he may spend rest of his life in jail and breath his last there.

The justice is done. Does not matter, at a very high cost.

We proved Rule of the Law. The Accused an enemy terrorist is allowed to defend. Let the world know and acknowledge there is Law in India.
