Snatcher who escaped from Kerala Police custody held in Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS): A serial snatcher who had earlier escaped from Kerala Police custody has been arrested by Delhi Police Crime Branch from the national capital, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

Accused Mahfooz was arrested from Gokalpuri in north-east Delhi. He has several cases registered against him, including for robbery and murder.

The police said that Mahfooz of Mustfabad area here and his accomplice Ankur had visited Ernakulum and indulged in a number of gold chain snatchings in the Kerala city.

They returned to Delhi in August and sold the snatched gold chains to one Haji Soni, a resident of Chand Bagh here.

In October, they again visited Ernakulum. While staying put in a hotel near the city railway station, they snatched gold chains from several passers-by. However, they were apprehended on October 3 during police checking.

"On October 29, Mahfooz was taken in six-day remand by Kerala Police. While they were travelling to Delhi along with Mahfooz for the recovery of case property and arrest Haji Soni, Mahfooz jumped out from the running train near Bhopal station around 3 am on November 2 and escaped," Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shibesh Singh said.
