Centre releases Rs 577 crore to Karnataka towards flood relief

New Delhi, Nov 13: Thousands of crore worth property and crop got destroyed in 13 districts of Karnataka in 2020 due to incessant rains which resulted in flooding. The union government has released a compensation of Rs 577 crore for the damages.

In a high level meeting presided over by home minister Amit Shah Rs 4,381.88 crore was granted to six states of the country towards flood relief. This money will be released from National Disaster Management Fund.

Apart from Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Sikkim states will receive the flood relief funds. Union government gave approval to release Rs 577 crore towards the flooding and landslide that occurred during southwest monsoon.

West Bengal was given a grant of Rs 2,707 crore for the relief works of damage that was caused by Amphan cyclone. Odisha was given Rs 128 crore towards flood relief by the high level committee of the union government. Maharashtra will get Rs 268 crore as compensation to cover the damages that occurred due to Nisarga cyclone. In addition, the high level committee has approved to release Rs 611 crore and Rs 87 crore to Madhya Pradesh and Sikkim respectively.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited West Bengal and Odisha on May 22, 2020 to assess the damages caused by Amphan cyclone. Then Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 500 crore were released to West Bengal and Odisha respectively as emergency relief funds. Now additional compensation is given by the union government.

The union government had sent its team to manage the disaster as soon as flooding, incessant rains, landslide and cyclones were reported in all the six states. It had also procured detailed report on the loss of life of human beings and cattle and losses occurred to property and crop by sending its study team. The state governments had also provided their report. Considering all the factors, the high level committee has decided to release the funds.

In the financial year 2020-21, union government has released an amount of Rs 15,524.43 crore to 28 states of the country State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
