Udupi: Countdown to Gram Panchayat Poll Verdict Begins

Udupi, May 17: There are only a few hours to go before the results of gram panchayat polls in the undivided Dakshina Kannada (DK) district are announced. 

Over 5,000 candidates have contested in the polls in Udupi and DK districts and their fate will be known by evening on Monday May 17. 

Under Udupi district, gram panchayat polls were held in various villages across Udupi taluk and Karkala taluk on Saturday May 8.  

The polls were held in the rest of the villages across DK district, Kundapur taluk, and Karkala taluk of Udupi district on Wednesday May 12.  The results of the elections will be announced by Monday May 17.

During electioneering authorities had banned the use of any symbols in the ballots and more candidates with much appeal to the masses tried their luck in the polls.  

Although, none of the political parties in the undivided DK district backed candidates under their symbols, they have backed candidates indirectly during the election campaign in these gram panchayat polls. 

The counting of votes will begin at various centers across undivided DK district at 8.00 am on Monday and the results will be announced after 11.00 am.  

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been clamped in undivided DK district by the police authorities banning victory processions by winners soon after the announcement of poll results.
