Mangaluru, Nov 30: Madeleine Institutions - units of the Bethany Educational Society ® here, along with the Labour Department of DK, Mulki town panchayat, like-minded organizations and people of goodwill conducted an awareness programme among the construction workers on Sunday November 29 at 11.00 am at the community Hall (Samudaya Bhavan) of K S Rao Nagar Lingappiyyakadu Karnad Mulki.
Sr Anna Maria BS, the provincial councillor and coordinator for Social Action, Mangaluru province presided over the function. The programme was symbolically launched by building bricks as an image of building the life of the construction workers. She urged the construction workers to claim their rights and avail their benefits under Karnataka builders and other workers Welfare Board. Fr Sylvester DCosta, the parish priest of Immaculate Conception Church, Mulki implored God’s divine presence upon the participants and expressed that this venture accompanies the construction workers to obtain welfare schemes.
Wilma Elizabath Tauro, the labour officer of the labour department of DK in her awareness speech, brought to light the hidden treasures of the legislation of the Government of India on ‘Building and other construction workers (regulations of employment and conditions of services) Act 1996. She also explained in length the welfare schemes of Karnataka building and other construction workers welfare board 2006.
The chief guests of the day namely, Ibrahim – secretary of Information & Service Centre Karnad, Rtn PHF Ashok Kumar Shetty – President of Rotary club Mulki, Joel Herald D'Souza, civil contractor, ACMP former vice-president and Lion MJF Prathibha Hebbar – president of Lions Club Mulki were present and assured support for the cause of the construction workers. Sr Nandita BS the superior of Madeleine Bethany Institutions welcomed the gathering. Sr Mariola BS the principal of Madeleine PU College, in her keynote address, called on the construction workers to claim their rights and to be assertive.
Many issues of the construction workers were discussed with the labour officer. Around 85 construction workers presented their documents for registration. A good number of construction workers participated in the programme. The heads of the Madeleine Institutions along with their staff organized the programme in collaboration with the labour department of Mangaluru DK, Mulki town panchayat, Rotary, Lions, Information & Service Centre. Vishanth Shetty compered the programme and Abhishek proposed the vote of thanks. The invocation was performed by the teaching faculty of Madeleine Institutions.
