Fake call centre busted in Gurugram, 2 nabbed

Gurugram, Dec 9 (IANS): The Cyber Crime team of the Gurugram police on Wednesday busted an illegal call centre allegedly operating in Sector-45 in Gurugram. The call centre had been duping US nationals since January 2020 on the pretext of providing Amazon security support service, the police said.

The accused duo, who are co-partners in the fake call centre, have been identified as 32-year-old Praveen Kumar from Rohtak and 32-year-old Manish Kumar from Gurugram. They ran the call centre called 'Squad Company'.

According to the police, a team of the Cyber Crime police station led by DLF Additional Commissioner of Police, Karan Goyal, raided the call centre at plot number 210-A, Sector-45 in Gurugram following a tip-off.

During the raid, the police arrested the two persons in connection with the matter and seized two mobile phones and other electronic gadgets from their possession.

The police also detained 13 other people who were employed at the fake call centre. However, after questioning, the police released these youths.

"We received specific inputs that a fake call centre had cheated several US nationals on the pretext of being Amazon security support service provider in Sector-45 area. The youths employed at the call centre operated without a registered license issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT)," said Karan Goyal, ACP (DLF).

During questioning, the accused revealed that they used to communicate with US citizens as Amazon security support service providers and charged money via e-gift redeemed card. The accused used to work in Delhi-Gurugram based call centres, duping American citizens, he added.

"The matter is under investigation. How the accused were operating the fake call centre is part of the investigation. The involvement of other people cannot be ruled out. The culprits are in police remand for further questioning," the official said.

An FIR under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the IT Act has been registered at the Cyber Crime police station.
