War-time bomb found buried in Bangladesh airport premises

Dhaka, Dec 10 (IANS): A war-time bomb weighing around 250 kg was found buried at a construction site of Bangladesh's main Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in capital Dhaka, the country's Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

In a statement, the ISPR, media and news agency of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, said that the workers first noticed the cylinder-like general purpose (GP) bomb about three metres deep in the ground on Wednesday morning, reports Xinhua news agency.

After the authorities were informed, members of the bomb disposal unit of the Bangladesh Air Force's Bangabandhu Base rushed to the scene and defused the explosive which was later sent for demolition.

ISPR said experts identified it as an air-dropped bomb.

They are assuming that it was dropped sometime in 1971, it added.
