Vijayapura: Twins suffer because of faux pas of income tax department

Vijayapura, Dec 12: In a strange case, twin brothers are suffering because of the mistake committed by someone else. The mistake came to light a decade later, after the department of agriculture served them a notice.

Hasansab Nabisab Halli from Arjunagi village of Babaleshwar taluk in the district and Hussainsab Nabisab Halli are twins. Hasansab is a farmer while Hussainsab served the army and retired two weeks back and returned to home town. Both have six acres of land. Hussainsab Halli has got his PAN card done and has been remitting income every year.

Hasansab got his PAN card done in 2010. Being a farmer, he has not been paying any income tax. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana, he got Rs 10,000 subsidy on the basis of self-declaration and used it. Recently, he received a notice from farmers contact centre at Babaleshwar which said that being a taxpayer, he is ineligible for government subsidy. He was asked to meet agricultural department officials and return the money failing which he will not be eligible for benefit under any government schemes.

Hasansab met a chartered accountant. After continuous verifications for a week, it came to light that both of them hold the same PAN number and the income tax remitted by Hussainsab was being credited to Hasansab Halli's account. Hasansab is now in a fix. He points out that even though their dates of birth are the same, signatures, photos and Aadhar numbers are different. Even the names in the PAN cards are spelt differently. Hussainsab’s PAN card spells his name as H N Halli while that of Hasansab as Hasansab Halli. But numbers are the same.

Both the brothers are now frantically moving around to set the records straight. Those who committed the mistake, who should be made to correct their mistakes, do not seem to be bothered.

How come same PAN Card number was issued to two different persons? A duplicate PAN card with the same number is issued only when a report of loss or theft is received. A grave mistake on the part of the IT Dept.

Why is it very easy to make a mistake in government documents but it's a mountain high task to correct that mistake ? Always. To prove an applicant is right is much more easy than convincing them that they are wrong.
