Mangaluru: Gram panchayat election - Women play pivotal roles

Mangaluru, Dec 18: Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Dr Rajendra K V visited the electoral mustering and remustering centre opened at the Infant Jesus Kannada and English Medium School at Kodankapu in Bantwal taluk recently.

The district will witness a two-phased gram panchayat election. Women have been playing a major role in the election. Out of the total seats, women have got over 50 percent. Even among the voters, women outnumber men.

Election is being conducted for a total of 220 panchayats in the district. Out of 32,222 vacant seats, 1,669 have been reserved for women. But the remaining 1,553 seats have been reserved for general category. But women can fight the election under general category too.

Under panchayat raj system, 50 percent seats are set aside for women. If the number of members in a panchayat is even, the other spot is given to women. As such, the women have got 116 additional seats. Among the voters too, women outnumber men by a margin of 15,388.
