Man arrested for smuggling Rs 40L gold


Chennai, Dec 18 (IANS): Chennai Air Customs on Friday said it has arrested one person for trying to smuggle in 790 gram of gold valued at Rs 40.2 lakh.

In a statement Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport said 44-year-old Rawther, who flew in here from Dubai, was intercepted at the exit.

On his personal search three bundles of gold paste weighing 810 gram were recovered from his rectum which yielded 741 gram of 24 carat purity gold valued at Rs 37.7 lakh on extraction.

A 49 gram gold cut bit valued at Rs 2.50 lakh was also recovered from his trouser pocket.

A total of 790 gram of gold valued at Rs 40.2 lakh was recovered and seized under Customs Act from him and he was arrested.

Gold paste bundle was also recovered from the rectums of two other passengers who flew in from Dubai. The gold paste yielded 182 gram of 24 carat purity gold valued at Rs 9.4 lakh on extraction and same was seized.
