Mysterious structure set up at Pyongyang square: Report

Seoul, Dec 19 (IANS): A website dedicated to track events in North Korea said in its latest report that a "mysterious structure" has been set up in Pyongyang, which might be a part of the the ruling Workers' Party Congress slated to be held next month, it was reported on Saturday.

In its report released on Friday, the Washington-based 38 North website revealed that a small building surrounded by a high wall has been built in Kim Il-sung Square "right across the street from the viewing platform used by Kim Jong-un and party officials during parade", reports Yonhap News Agency.

The report, citing recent satellite imagery, added that another structure was set up adjacent to the small buliding but outside the walled-off area, adding that the construction appears to have started last week.

"The purpose of the buildings is unclear, although they could be related to the upcoming eighth Party Congress that is expected to take place in January," 38 North said.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, North Korea could unveil a new national strategy to deal with a series of challenges, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, during the Party Congress.

According to the South Korean intelligence agency, the North has also planned to stage a parade to mark the event.

The Kim Il-sung Square has been a venue for massive events.
