Ex-clerk found dead, FIR against Gurugram SDO

Gurugram, Dec 29 (IANS): A retired clerk in Gurugram was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his home, police said on Tuesday. His family has alleged that he was being harassed by the staff and officer of the Gurugram Electricity Corporation during the lockdown related to around Rs 19 lakh.

A case of abetment to suicide against a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in the Electricity Department has been registered after a complaint was filed by the victim's family, the police said.

The retired clerk, identified as 58-year-old Devki Nandan, was found dead on Monday.

The deceased belonged to Jacobpura area in Gurugram. He worked as a clerk in the Gurugram Electricity Corporation and had retired on August 31, 2020.

The victim's family told the police that Devki Nandan was allegedly under stress for nearly five months before his retirement.

The son of the victim, Dheeraj, told the police that his father had given Rs 18.42 lakh of the Electricity Department to Deepak, an employee of the Radiant Cash Collection Agency. The victim had taken the receipt of this amount from Deepak and deposited it in the records of the office.

"It is alleged that even after the amount was deposited in the bank account of the office, SDO Gaurav Chaudhary and other staff were continuously pressuring Devaki Nandan. They were threatening him to file a case against him for failing to give the money," Dheeraj told the police.

Devaki was under severe pressure due to the harassment by SDO Gaurav Chaudhary and hanged himself, Dheeraj has alleged.

Chaudhary has denied the allegations of harassment levelled against him.

The autopsy was to be conducted on Tuesday, the Gurugram police said.

"A case has been registered against the SDO under sections of the IPC at the city police station in Gurugram. Further probe is underway," added Subhash Boken, Gurugram police spokesperson.
