Algerian Prez returns home after Covid-19 treatment in Germany

Algiers, Dec 30 (IANS): Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has returned home after recovering from Covid-19 at a specialised hospital in Germany, where he was shifted for treatment in October.

"Being away from home is too hard, and the accumulating duties are harder," Xinhua news agency quoted Tebboune as saying on Tuesday night upon his arrival in Algiers.

"I thank God for my safe return, and I'm not far from full recovery," he said.

On October 27, Tebboune, who assumed office in December 2019, was admitted in a specialised treatment unit at the Central Army Hospital in the capital Algiers, before being rushed to Germany a day later for "in-depth medical examinations" upon recommendation of his medical staff.

He started a self-imposed isolation on October 24 after he had come into contact of some senior officials who showed symptoms of Covid-19.

In mid-December, the president posted a five-minute video on his official Twitter account, the first public appearance since his hospitalisation in Germany.

Algeria has so far reported 98,988 confirmed coronavirus cases and 2,745 deaths.
