Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covishield vaccine cleared by expert panel

New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS): The 10-member Subject Expert Committee of India's Central Drug Standard Control Organisation on Friday approved emergency use authorisation of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine 'Covishield'.

The expert panel had convened a meeting to take a call on the emergency use authorisation sought by the Serum Institute of India, the manufacturer of Covishield, and Bharat Biotech for its Covaxin.

Once the vaccines are cleared by the committee, the application will be sent to Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) V.G. Somani for final approval.

We do not know if it will work on the new strain or not, but we know that due to mutation the spike protein of the virus has changed. The Oxford vaccine is based on mRNA and the antibodies produced latch to the spike protein (designed for the original virus). More effective, safer and time tested would be the vaccines produced from attenuated or inactivated virus (the one produced by Bharat Biotech- Covaxin uses inactivated virus).

Oxford vaccine isn't mRNA type, it's Adenovirus type using double stranded DNA.

Error on my part.Oxford is not based on m RNA but as you rightly said on Adeno virus. But it is loaded with genetic material of Corona virus spike protein. In the mutant strain as the spike protein has changed,we do not know if it will work against the new strain.
